Problem Statement (Initial) Hospital crutches are bulky and hard to use in school and crowded places.

Problem Statement (Modified) Crutches are very bulky; and therefore, they are difficult to store in crowded settings when the crutches are not in use.

Hypothesis If the crutch could compact to ½ of its original size, it will be easier to manage the storage when not in use.

Justification Would you consider it difficult to store crutches in crowded settings when they are not in use?

Background  Tubular Metal Crutch Patent number: 724,382

Design Solution

Test Procedure  Obtain the following items: Weights Fastening Device Bucket Hook Data Collection Sheet Crutch Video Camera Clamps

Test Procedure  Set Up Make sure all parts of the crutch are working properly Secure the crutch vertically between two sturdy tables Have Data Collection Sheet ready

Test Procedure  Testing: Underarm Rest Using the hook, hang the bucket from the underarm rest of the crutch Carefully add weight at constant increments Stop if the crutch breaks, bends, cracks, etc.

Test Procedure  Testing: Handle Using the hook, hang the bucket from the handle of the crutch Carefully add weight at constant increments Stop if the crutch breaks, bends, cracks, etc.

Test Procedure  Final Inspection Check the crutch for any damages such as bends, cracks, scratches, etc. Slide tubes up and down Fold leg up and down Check all locking mechanisms

Test Procedure  Final Size: Measure the crutch fully extended, collapsed. Document measurements

Conclusion  Crutch folds to ½ size for storage  Crutch supports full load from extended position  Crutch supports full load from underarm rest and handle with zero deformation  If everybody switches to our crutch - then crutch clutter will be cut in the future!
