Consider how life is depicted in the following clip… What words would you use to describe life in Victorian England ?

Next, let’s read through an extract from The Time Machine about the living conditions of the Eloi… …what words would you use to describe their living conditions?

Your assessment task You will need to write a formal, paragraphed response (using P.E.E.) for the following question: How and why does HG Wells describe the living conditions of the Eloi in this extract?

How will you be assessed? Consider the cover sheet given to you. What is your target grade? What do you need to do to ensure that you achieve your target grade?

Planning your response Start by reading the extract over again. Highlight or underline key quotes that you think are effective at describing the living conditions of the Eloi. Record at least 3 key quotes into your workbook. Copy them exactly. Consider one of your quotes. First, create a statement (your point) about that quote. Next, write an explanation about what that quote tells you and why it is effective.

For example Say you’ve chosen the following section of the text: ‘stained-glass windows, which displayed only a geometrical pattern, were broken in many places, and the curtains that hung across the lower end were thick with dust.’ Wells describes one of the buildings as quite grand, yet at the same time dilapidated and neglected. For example, upon entering one building the narrator describes seeing ‘stained-glass windows’ which were ‘broken in many places’, as well as curtains which were ‘thick with dust’. This shows that the buildings were not well cared for, which suggests that the people living there either don’t know how to properly care for their surroundings, or else don’t have the capacity to do so.

Making use of outside sources In order to obtain a high lever on this assessment you must show that you can make use of secondary sources. You have conducted research to this end; try to use it! Can you link any of your quotes to an aspect of Victorian life? Can you make reference to personal beliefs held by HG Wells, which might have found there way into the novel?

Try it… Consider one of your quotes. First, create a statement (your point) about that quote. Incorporate the quote into your own sentence. You may wish to start with ‘For example, the narrator describes…’ Next, write an explanation about what that quote tells you and why it is effective. You may wish to use the words ‘because’ or ‘which’ to help extend your response.

Swap responses with someone sat near you. Read through their paragraph. Give one mark for each of the following: 1) They make a clear statement that introduces their quote. 2) They use a quote. 3)The quote has no spelling or punctuation errors (they used quotation marks, capital letters for names, commas where necessary, etc) 4) Their explanation is detailed and makes sense. They may make use of the words ‘because’ or ‘which’ to extend their response. I really liked … (The quote you used) I think you should try to… (explain your quote /4 with more detail)

Self assessment Using the grade criteria given to you, highlight the level you feel your work falls into. Look at the level above. What can you do to reach that level? Next, consider the comments given to you by your peer. Give yourself one target for improvement.
