WebLabs: Genetic Activities The Study of Genetics

Maryland Science Content Standard Students will be able to explain the ways that genetic information is passed from parent to offspring in different organisms. In sexual reproduction, a single specialized cell from a female merges with a single specialized cell from a male and the fertilized egg now has genetic information from each parent, that multiplies to form the complete organism composed of about a trillion cells, each of which contains the same genetic information

Objective Students will understand that not all traits show complete dominance. Students will understand how some traits are passed on sex chromosomes, and these traits will show due to only having one allele.

Notebook Title:WebLabs Date:3/2/2016

What to Do…. Go to the following website to complete interactive genetic activities Click Me When you go to the site, click on and complete each of the following: Incomplete/CoDominance Sex Determination and Linkage How Does DNA Work?

What Was Learned?? Give an example, not mentioned in the activity of incomplete dominance and co-dominance. Why are some traits shown more often in males than in females? What does “sex linked trait” mean? Explain what genetic counselors are looking at when helping families.

Vocabulary What vocabulary words were in these lessons and how did the lesson help you understand their meaning better?
