Mechanical Engineering Ch. 13

Vocab & Definitions Component Linking Linking characteristics Guiding A part or fluid that performs a mechanical function. Linking The mechanical function performed by any component that connects different parts of a tech. object. Linking characteristics Descriptions of how linking occurs. Every tech object has 4 basic linking characteristics. Guiding The mechanical function performed by a component that controls the motion of moving parts. Guiding component/control The component whose mechanical function is to guide the motion of moving parts.

What is mechanical Engineering? Definition: Branch of engineering that focuses on the design, production, analysis, working and improvement of a technical object. In other words it looks at how things work.

To understand how an object works one must consider: Links Guides Motion transmission Motion Transformation Speed change

Links Linking is the mechanical function performed by any component that connects different parts of an object.

Links Links can have many different characteristics… Direct vs. indirect Rigid vs. Flexible Removable vs. Non-removable Complete vs. Partial

Direct vs. Indirect Glue A link is direct when two objects hold together without a linking component. A link is indirect when the parts need something else (a linking component) to hold them together. Examples of linking components are glue, sticky tack, nails, screws … Glue

Rigid vs. Flexible A link is rigid when the linking component or the surfaces of the linked parts are rigid. A link is flexible when the linking component or the surfaces of the linked parts can be deformed. E.g. springs, rubber, Sticky tack

Removable vs. non-removable A link is removable when the linked parts can be separated without damaging either the surfaces or the linking component. E.g. nail, screw, nut and bolts, lids, etc. A link is non-removable when separating the linked parts damages their surface or the linking component E.g. glue, cement etc.

Complete vs. Partial A link is complete when it prevents the linked parts from moving independently of one another. E.g. nail … A link is partial when at least one part can move independently of the other part E.g. hinges …

Guides A guiding component is a component whose mechanical function is to guide the motion of moving parts. Types of guides Translational guide Ensures the straight translational motion of a moving part Ex – Grooves on the sides of a window, drawer of a file cabinet. Rotational guide Ensures the rotational motion of a moving part Ex – axles of a bicycle, pin in a doorknob. Helical guide Ensures a combination of translational and rotational motion of a moving part. Ex – threads on a screw-top bottle, threads of a clamp.
