02/02/2016 Paolo Ferracin33

LARP prototype structure Structure MQXFA1 – 4 m long – Same concept as short model structure 1 and 2 – To be delivered in spring 2016 Structure MQXFA2 – Same concept as short model structure 1 and 2 but with ARMCO steel – Procurement to be started in spring / summer 2016 Structure MQXFA3 – Procurement in end of 2017, early /02/2016 Paolo Ferracin34

CERN prototype structure Baseline with thin laminations Procurement to be launched after the qualification of structure 3 in April/May 2016 – Material ordered sooner 02/02/2016 Paolo Ferracin35

Outline Magnet design Schedule of short models and prototypes Overview of support structures for short models Update on support structures for prototypes Some open points 02/02/2016 Paolo Ferracin36

Thin/Thick iron laminations Structure 3 qualified with dummy coils in May 2016 – Is it enough? If no major issues, there is time to launch the fabrication for structure of CERN first prototype What about LARP prototypes? – Not possible for MQXFA1 – Tight for MQXFA2 – Definitely possible for MQXFA3 CERN is procuring sufficient iron (ARMCO) plate also for MQXFA series What about structure 4? – Shell and collar missing Possible to use structure 0 shells and cut them (like for MQXFSD1) Recycle collar from MQXFS1 – Still, the radius has been slightly changed – Would be useful to have a “final” short model structure for LARP, if laminations are chosen – Assembled/cooled down with dummy coils at LBNL? 02/02/2016 Paolo Ferracin37

Lhe containment When? – MQXFS1c, after high pre-load test in MQXFS1b, in 08/16 – MQXFS2b in 06/16 02/02/2016 Paolo Ferracin38

Cold mass design Complete design of magnet end region – Connection box – End cover – Bus/bars and lyra – …in general, more detailed design of cold mass to verify possible real estate issues 02/02/2016 Paolo Ferracin39
