Glory of Classical Greece AIM: In what ways did Greek thinkers, artists, and writers explore the nature of the universe and the place of people in it?

Plato Student of Socrates Emphasized importance of reason and logic Socrates Socratic Method of discussion: asking questions to arrive at a conclusion Sophist: “wisdom” Philosophers: “Lovers of Wisdom” Aristotle Student of Plato Tutored Alexander the Great Deductive reasoning (All humans are mortal. I am a human. I am mortal.)

Architecture The Doric style is sturdy and its top (the capital) is plain. The Ionic style is thinner and more elegant. Its capital is decorated with a scroll-like design. The Corinthian style is very fancy. Its capital is elaborate and decorated with leaves.

Architecture: reflect perfect balance Parthenon: dedicated to goddess Athena

Humanism and Sculpture Humanism: live your life for yourself and others- not for God or Gods Focus on human potential Early sculptors imitated rigid Egyptian poses. Later sculptors emphasized natural poses that were lifelike but also idealistic. Paintings offer views of Greek life.

Olympic Games The Greeks invented athletic contests and held them in honour of their gods- specifically Zeus held at Olympia, which took place every four years Sacred truce: a peace between all city-states (even if at war!) lasting one month before the Games so that people could travel to Olympia safely Games were more important than wars because they were a religious festival

Poetry and Drama Classical style: balanced and elegant words Homer: The Iliad and The Odyssey Drama: based on Greek myths and legends Tradegy: stories of human suffering Comedy: humorous plays

Greek History Applied reason, logic, and observation to history Herodotus: “father of history” Research and analyzing biases

Plato’s Allegory of the Cave Use the Socratic Method to analyze Plato’s Allegory What problem is Plato describing and what was he trying to teach the reader? Homework Prepare for Socratic Seminar
