Essential Question How have the British and French affected Canada’s Language and Religion? City of Quebec Additional question: How have the French and British influenced Canada’s cultural Make up?

Inuit Culture

Remember Who Settled Canada First, the Inuit lived there for 1000s of years. (aka First Nations) Canada was originally colonized by French (fur trade) British wanted part of the fur trade; fought & won French and Indian War Divided Canada into Upper Canada (British) and Lower Canada (French) “Lower Canada” is now called Quebec Canada was united in 1867--British North America Act But Quebec is still predominately French After Canadian Independence, many immigrant groups have moved to Canada. Ex: from China, Belgium, France, Switzerland, West Africa. Question 1: How do you think this has impacted Canada’s culture? It has made it very diverse.

Diversity of Canada’s Culture Question 2: What is Canada’s largest Culture Group? What is their 2nd Largest? Why do you think this is?

Canada is very culturally diverse.

Canada’s Languages Canada has 2 official languages = Bilingual English and French (in Quebec) They are the languages used in schools and by Canadian government. However, some Canadian speak other languages too, they’re just not “official languages” Ex: People may speak Chinese or Native (Inuit) languages, but they are unofficial languages. Question 3: Does America have any unofficial languages? Give an example. Yes. Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Korean, German, etc.

Question 4: Why do you think Canada’s official languages are French and English and not the Native Language of the Inuit?

Canada’s Religions Canada’s people follow many different religions Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist,… However, more Canadians are Christians than any other religion Catholic (French influence) and Protestant (English influence)

Catholics (French) and Protestants (English) were the languages of the European settlers in Canada. Question 5: Why do you think more Canadians are Catholic and Protestant than all of the other religions?

Roman Catholic Areas

France’s Lasting Influence Many French Canadians had become Quebec nationalists & thought of themselves as Quebecois, not Canadians. Many French Canadians felt that their language & culture might disappear French language & culture was overwhelmed by English Tired of feeling like second class citizens in their own country Most started to think that Quebec should secede from Canada (be independent) Separatists--want Quebec to “separate” from Canada. 1980 & 1995--people of Quebec voted whether or not to secede Both votes were in favor of staying Canadian Last vote--49.4% voted to secede; 50.6% voted to stay Canadian…wow! Question 6: can you list some pros & cons of an Independent Quebec?

Canada’s Culture Question 7: How have the British and French affected Canada’s culture? Poutine
