Prewriting for Research Choose a topic  Select a focus  Develop question(s) to guide research  Gather sources  Take notes  Develop an outline

Select Sources BE SELECTIVE R.IV.2 - Demonstrate the ability to preview and predict. Preview text features to make a prediction about the text content. (Note: Text features may include headings, subheadings, illustrations, footnotes, captions, topic sentences, book jackets, introductory paragraphs, and such graphic displays as charts, maps, graphs, and timelines.)

Document Sources Source/ Bibliography cards (3 x 5) 1. Create a separate source card for each source you use. 2. List on the card all information that will be needed later to document the source on your “Works Cited” page – refer to handout or MLA guide. 3. Number each card consecutively in the top right corner.

Guiding Questions Guiding questions should, duh… guide your research. You may use these as a basis for beginning, but the more you read, the more you may uncover other specific questions that need answers.

Take Notes (4 x 6 cards) Summarize – focus on key points and concepts, jotting down main idea of the passage; will be a shortened version of original Paraphrase – restate the original in your own words; read the lines, look away from the text, and rewrite using your own wording; may not necessarily be shorter Quote – copy word for word from the original; use quotation marks

Why Focus on Note Taking? Note taking enhances students’ ability to identify the relevant information presented in a learning experience. Note taking provides a structure for organizing relevant information in such a way that it captures the main ideas and supporting detailing. from Classroom Instruction that Works

What Does the Research Indicate about Note Taking? Verbatim note taking is, perhaps, the least effective way to take notes. Notes should be considered a work in progress. Notes should be used as study guides for tests. The more notes that are taken, the better. from Classroom Instruction that Works

What is the format for Cornell Notes?

In very few cases, social workers can make as little as $20, 000 or earn as high as $74,000._Those who work in schools and hospitals tend to make more money than those who work in residential settings. ___________________ ______________________summary, pg 5_____ Record – this is where you actually record or write down your summarized, paraphrased or quoted information from your source material.

You may write this in main idea phrases or in question form.

Cornell Notes applied to research note-taking? BACK OF INDEX CARD Reflect – this is where you jot down your thoughts as to the relevance of the information you have recorded. You may reflect on how information connects to previous information, how it changes/clarifies your thought process, and/or your opinion about the information. I thought social workers made more money than that. I wonder which areas of social work is paying on the low end. The only way I would work as a social worker was if I could work in a hospital or school setting because I need more than just $20,000.

Cornell Notes applied to research note-taking? BACK OF INDEX CARD Reflect – this reflecting will help you to remember what your thoughts were when you took the notes and will make it easier for you to elaborate on your ideas when you start drafting. It will also make it easier for you to show the connection between ideas. TOO MANY STUDENTS SKIP ELABORATION AND COHESION OF IDEAS WHEN THEY TRANSFER NOTE CARD INFORMATION TO THE ACTUAL PAPER! I thought social workers made more money than that. I wonder which areas of social work is paying on the low end. The only way I would work as a social worker was if I could work in a hospital or school setting because I need more than just $20,000.
