Where AM I? Maps and Globes

Why Are Maps Important? What is a map? - a flat model or layout of part of the Earth Why are they so important? - they keep people from getting lost - they allow you to find things - they allow you to keep track of resources

What Can Maps Show Us? Directions (north, south, east, west) Where the nearest water is! Elevation changes Where states, countries, counties, cities, etc. are What roads to take

What About those round things? Globes! - A globe is a spherical model of the entire earth What Makes Them So Special? - globes can show us the ‘big picture’ of our planet – all the oceans and all the landmasses - globes also show us important lines like the Equator, the tropics, and longitude and latitude

Okay….whatever – how do I use them? In order to know how to correctly use a map, you need to know how to read its legend and its scale: Legend: a list of symbols that represent something on the map and their meaning Scale: the way to show distance on a map - since maps aren’t life sized, they need to shrink distances and by using a scale, you can still find out how far away something is
