Media & Beauty

What do you consider as “tuff?” In other words, what types of clothes, music, movies, cars, etc., do you see as cool or impressive? Why do you feel that these items are “tuff?”

The Evolution of Media The 1960’s had the highest number of teenagers than any generation before it because they belonged to a group called the “baby boomers.” As a result, the influence of media on teenagers was extremely high. Therefore, the 1960’s became all about looks: a trend that continues today. Today we will examine how media influences the way we want to look

What Does the Media Tell Me? You will spend the next few minutes examining ads in a magazine that focus on looks and portraying a specific image. You will answer the questions on your “Tuff Looks” Sheet.

Example 1.What is this an advertisement for? This is an advertisement for the luxury brand Dolce and Gabana. 2. What is the stated-general message? The general message is to buy their product, the dress. 3. What is the subliminal message? What makes you believe that? The subliminal message is that to buy this dress makes one look like a celebrity. This is due to Madonna having the dress on. The advertisers are trying to convince women that by wearing this dress they can be both the homemaker, but a gorgeous one, by showing Madonna wearing it as she glamorously does the dishes. Furthermore, by wearing the D&G the ad is aiming at a higher-class of women who desire to be like celebrities because not every women can afford this type of brand.
