Was a secret transportation system that got fugitive slaves out of plantations in the south to the north. Started in the early 1800’s. Saved approximately 100,000 slaves between 1810 and 1850.
Escaping was the hardest part. Train conductors pretended to be slaves and took slaves secretly onto a train o the north. Usually escape at night, you might have to leave your family behind.
Stations or stops were mostly at churches or houses. Had to be crammed in little spaces. Ex: Secret rooms, floor boards, barns, and behind cupboards.

Traveled at least 19 times there and back on the Underground Railroad. Served as a spy, scout, and Nurse during the Civil War. the slaveholders’ offered rewards for anyone who captured Harriet Tubman, these eventually added up to $.40,000
