Lesson 2: Workplace Digital Communication

Objectives: • Examine the use of digital communication in the workplace • Evaluate application of workplace policies and code of conduct in the use of digital communication • Determine proper and improper use of digital communication on the job

Here’s a generic example of company policies in regards to digital communication: Discussion tips: Ask students why companies have policies and procedures. Read a few of the generic policies and discuss fairness, reality of the rules being followed, etc… Share examples of people breaking the policies and the consequences

Why are the following examples of improper behavior in the workplace: Sending personal emails Improper use of company chat Browsing internet sites that are not work-related Social networking from personal devices or company owned devices Using company resources to look for another job Discussion tips: Have students give additional examples of improper use of digital communication in the workplace. Make sure to stress that company provided resources are to be used as indicated by the company. Any other use is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
