How democratic was Mao’s ‘New Democracy’? LO: to explain how the CCP power structure helped Mao consolidate his power

A ‘people’s democratic dictatorship’. Compare your notes from this source. Have you got similar definitions/understandings? Any questions? Put them on a post-it note and we’ll see if we can answer them by the end of the lesson.

How democratic was Mao’s ‘New Democracy’? Who was in and who was out? INOUT: The people‘five black categories’: ‘reactionary elements’ ‘feudal elements’ ‘lackeys of imperialism’ ‘Bureaucratic capitalists’ ‘enemies of the people’ These groups were classified as ‘non-people’, lacking any political rights but nevertheless subject to laws of the State. They were to be repressed, punished or reformed. What problems can your foresee here?

How democratic was Mao’s ‘New Democracy’? The new system of government for the PRC contained 3 separate but parallel strands: Study the figure detailing the Communist political control over PRC. (AQA, p.42) Consider the strengths and weaknesses of this system. What is democratic, what is dictatorship? State bureaucracyCommunist Party The People’s Liberation Army

Different levels 1949 – China divided into 6 regions; these were reorganised in 1954 into 21 provinces. These provinces made up China (national) ↑ Counties were within a province ↑ Villages were within a county ↑ Most Chinese lived in a village

Point for discussion? ‘ Mao’s system of government was more dictatorship than democracy and the people had no influence at all’

Homework: Note taking How successful were the Communists in creating a political system that would give them control of power within the PRC? Read p. 173 – 175 and take notes as you go. CONDENSE your notes onto one side of A4 with key points and terms highlighted.
