Objectives O Essential Standard/Objective- O 9.ATOD.1.3 Contrast prescription medicines, nonprescription medicines and illegal substances in terms of their use and abuse. In Your Daybooks O Do you think these PSAs get the message out to teens about the negative effects of alcohol & drugs? O Why or Why not? O What are your personal beliefs about underage drinking? Key Terms Continued O Dependent- a need for a substance so strong that it becomes necessary to have this substance to function properly O Drug- any substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function. O Sobriety- the condition of not having any measurable levels, or effects from, alcohol or other drugs that alter ones mood or behaviors.

12% of Americans ages have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons.

10 million Americans 12 or older currently use illegal drugs.
