Governments of US Assignment: How weaknesses of AOC were corrected by Constitution Articles of Confederation 1.States had most power 2. 9 states to pass a law states to amend the constitution 4.Maintain armed forces, but could not force soldiers to join the army. 5.Could NOT impose taxes Constitution 1. For the states, the Articles of Confederation was “a firm league of friendship” in which each state retained “its sovereignty, freedom, and independence”. (States had majority of power] The Constitution gave the nation a federal government consisting of 3 branches, and the power to enforce its laws – in general federal govt a lot more power. Power of each branch Legislative Branch – make laws Executive Branch – enforce laws Judicial Branch - evaluate laws based on constitutionality Remember we are a federal system (federalism) --- federal and state governments share power. enumerated powers --- fed govt reserved powers - state govt concurrent powers – shared between fed and state govt
