Dean of Students and the Guidance Department working together

Xavier High School, New York City  Tom Gibbons, Dean of Students  Sara Robinson, Guidance Counselor

 Discussion with…  Administrator  Counselor  Teacher  Read the case study and discuss: how do you think Guidance and the Dean of Students could/should come together/act on the particular situation  What about the situation stands out for you?  What makes it difficult?  What questions come to mind?  Where do you see resistance happening? From who? *We will come around to each of the groups while you are discussing*

 Importance of communication among the two departments  Support and Trust  As counselors, what can we bring to the Dean of Students and what does the Dean of Students want to know?

 Please trust that I know my students well, and if I don’t I will say so  Understand my role as an advocate for my students, even when they have done wrong  Please consider the stressors and extenuating circumstances in their lives  Caring and Empathizing – Not Coddling  Challenging Students – Guidance Style!  Developing trust and partnering with the administration/Dean – Most Welcome!

 Holding students accountable – not punishment  Consistency is key  Trust me to do the right thing.  If you are open to hearing me, I am open to working with you  The individual and what the institution can bear  I care about students too!  Be OK with me saying “I need to sleep on it”  Any help or insight with parents is a huge help  Expellable Situations: I will call on the assistance of the Disciplinary Review Board for a recommendation  Sometimes, we have no choice but to ask a student to leave; it is never an easy decision.
