The Earth Information Exchange

Portal Structure Portal Functions/Capabilities Portal Content ESIP Portal and Geospatial One-Stop ESIP Portal and NOAA Overview

The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners is a network of researchers and associated groups that collects, interprets and develops applications for satellite-generated Earth observation information. Founded in 1998 under a grant from NASA, the consortium includes more than 80 member organizations, spanning NASA and NOAA's data centers, government research laboratories, research universities, education resource providers, technology developers, and nonprofit and commercial enterprises. The Earth Systems Information Partnership (ESIP)

Repository of standards compliant metadata (FGDC, ISO) integrated into a discovery system, which provides metadata search and browse capabilities, a map viewing capability, and efficient linkages (2 clicks to content) to external content. What is a Metadata Portal?

A Metadata Portal which will provide a gateway for viewing, exploring and accessing earth science data, applications, and supporting documentation provided by the 80 plus ESIP member organizations. What is the ESIP Portal - “Earth Information Exchange?”

An Earth Science data portal Organized, maintained and administered by scientists Efficient, standardized access to the comprehensive data resources of all ESIP partners (currently 80 and growing) Access to a wide array of earth science content (web applications, reports, services, models, etc.) What makes the Earth Information Exchange Unique?

Robust data search and discovery tools appropriate to earth science community Custom, Science-focused visualization and analysis tools Science data interoperability tools Integration of FGDC Remote Sensing Extensions An marketplace to foster the exchange of ideas, data, and information with the science community. What makes the Earth Information Exchange Unique? (cont)

Repository (catalog): Database containing metadata. Catalog Service: Web Services which enable users to interact with Repository Search for Metadata Publish Metadata to Repository Validate Metadata to ensure its standards compliant Portal Viewer: Web based Interface with portal interaction tools Manage Metadata Search & View Metadata View Maps Metadata Portal Components & Terminology

What is GOS? GOS is a geographic information system (GIS) portal known as the Geospatial One-Stop (GOS), that serves as a public gateway for improving access to geospatial information and data under the Geospatial One-Stop E-Government initiative. The GOS portal is a catalog of geospatial information containing thousands of metadata records (information about the data) and links to live maps, features, and catalog services, downloadable data sets, images, clearinghouses, map files, and more. ESIP & Geospatial One-Stop (GOS)

What similarities exist between (EIE) and GOS? Both utilize the same portal technology (ESRI Portal Toolkit) Both portals contain federal government metadata Overlapping Agencies (NOAA, NASA & EPA) Overlapping User Communities Both portals require standards compliant metadata FGDC ISO Is there likely to be a future partnership between EIE & GOS? YES ESIP & Geospatial One-Stop (GOS)

Partnership Spectrum GOS Community Own Portal Skin GOS Deploy GOS Search Portlets Connect to GOS Catalog Service (CSW) ESIP as a community within GOS Unique Look & Feel Developed and maintained by ESIP

Use new tools to build an Earth Science Community Leverage GOS IT and Support Resources Help partners comply with OMB E-Gov Initiative Begin to establish a unified metadata repository and data explorer interface for the science community Encourage inter-agency data sharing and collaboration Benefits of ESIP becoming a GOS Community

NOAA Metadata Challenges Standards Compliant Metadata Accurate Up-to-date Records Single Data Discovery Interface NOAA Metadata Infrastructure NMMR / CoRIS NOS Data Explorer NOAA Central Library NOAAServer CLASS MERMAID Organizational Questions NOAA and Geospatial One- Stop? Addressed by GOS?

Connecting NESDIS to Geospatial One-Stop Option 1: Geospatial One-Stop would be supported as an external interface through NOAAServer.

Connecting NESDIS to Geospatial One-Stop Option 2: Geospatial One-Stop would be supported directly from the NOAA Metadata Manager and Repository for NESDIS metadata. Other Line Offices develop and maintain independent systems. Other options…?

Organizational Questions? Content vs Interfaces Spend time building interface or focus on creating good metadata (content) Google or Facets speed and comprehensive nature of google specific fielded searches of facets Distributed vs Centralized Searches AND instead of OR Federation or Organization carrot vs stick
