The Egg Protector Challenge Grade Six

Clear everything off your desk....

The Challenge...  To create the cheapest Egg Protector that will protect an egg when dropped from a height of 2.5 metres.

Time Limits You have MINUTES to: 1. To think about your own unique design ideas for the egg protector 2. Draw or sketch your idea into a BLUEPRINT

Time Limits You have MINUTES to: 1.GET INTO YOUR GROUPs 2.Decide on ONE official design plan that combines everyone in your group’s ideas 3. Determine what materials you will need 4. List the materials and total price of your supplies on your ORDER SHEET. 5. Come up with a NAME for your EggProtector

When the BELL RINGS.... YOU WILL HAVE...

Time Limits 3 MINUTES to:  To send one person up from your group to get your supplies from the STORE

Time Limits 20 MINUTES to:  Build Your Egg Protector

Time Limits NEXT CLASS 5 MINUTES will be given to:  Test Your Design with the “Official Egg Drop”

Time Limits NEXT CLASS 5 MINUTES to SEE:  Results of the Egg Protector Challenge and Evaluate

The Goal of the Egg Protector Challenge Design an Egg Protector at the lowest cost possible that can be dropped from a height of 2.5 metres while keeping the egg safe.

Olympic RULES: 1. BLUEPRINTS need to be created.... FIRST

Olympic RULES: 2. Each material has a cost that must be listed on your price sheet.

Olympic RULES: 3. When you figure out what materials your group would like to use, you MUST record these materials on the ORDER SHEET.

Olympic RULES: 4.You MUST complete and submit a price sheet (with your total costs added up) in order to get supplies. Only one person from each group can submit the order form & collect supplies.

Olympic RULES: 5. You can only get supplies from the store for your egg protector.... ONE TIME

Olympic RULES: 6. Your egg protector MUST have a NAME.

Olympic RULES: 7. I should NOT see anyone wandering around to other groups or yelling across the room.

Olympic RULES: 8. You are going to want to keep your voices LOW to protect your group’s design plans and ideas.

9. No parachute designs allowed....

Egg-Heads General Store

BLUEPRINTS brainstorming consists of generating many, many ideas without judging the value of any idea

TIME TO GET INTO YOUR MOST EGGS...ACT GROUPs

Please bring your blueprint up to receive your group color...

Groups Group One (red) Group Two (yellow) Group Three (orange) Group Four (green)

Time Limits You have MINUTES to: 1.Decide on ONE official design plan that combines everyone in your group’s ideas 3. Determine what materials you will need 4. List the materials and total price of your supplies on your ORDER SHEET. 5. Come up with a NAME for your EggProtector

Where do we see this science everyday?  Helmets  Space Suits  Cars  Packing to Move  Packaging of Delicate Objects, such as electronics  Egg Cartons  Building Designs that withstand damage, like earthquakes and hurricanes  Stabilizing and transporting injured people

What Other Science Is Happening Here?

The Force of Gravity Gravity acts between everything in the Universe. Earth's gravity pulls everything downward. Without it, everything on our planet would float away. Have seen images of astronauts walking on the Moon?? The Moon has less mass/weight than Earth, so the force of gravity there is much weaker. That is why astronauts can jump far and high, but they will not float off the surface -- because the Moon's gravity still pulls them back down. On Earth, we cannot jump as high because our planet's force of gravity is much stronger.
