Topographic Map Of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore There are 21 islands in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Some of the more well known islands are: Raspberry, Devil and Stockton islands. Raspberry and Devil islands are known for their beautiful lighthouses. Stockton island has an amazing campground. Devil island Raspberry island Stockton island

Country Map Of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is located in Lake Superior, off the shore of Wisconsin, in the United States Of America. United States Of America

How the Apostle Island National Lakeshore was created Originally fur traders and explorers came across the islands while trying to find a way to the East Indies. Senator Gaylord Nelson sponsored the legislation to make it into a National Lakeshore; which President Nixon signed on September 26, 1970 at that time it only included 20 islands. In 1986 Long Island was added to the National Lakeshore. Senator Gaylord Nelson President Richard Nixon

Environmental issues in the Apostle Islands The biggest issue facing the Apostle Islands is climate change. As planet temperatures rise there is less ice cover, major losses of tree species (spruce, hemlock, birch), and reductions of fish populations (Coastal Brooke Trout for example). Birch tree Coastal Brooke Trout

Environmental issues in the Apostle Islands In the Apostle Islands there has been a sudden increase of white tailed deer. They are now over running the park. As this species keeps growing they are eating many endangered plant species.

Special Landforms In The Apostle Islands One special landform the Apostle Islands have are caves. These are formed by the erosion of sandstone which makes up most of the Apostle Islands. In the summer, spring, and fall many times there are water in the caves. But in the winter those caves become ice caves that you can walk into and enjoy all of the beauty.

Raspberry Island Lighthouse A special feature in the Apostle Islands is the Raspberry Island lighthouse. It was built in 1862 and sponsored by Henry Rice a well known politician. It is nicknamed the “Showplace of the Apostle Islands”

Rocks In The Apostle Islands There are many different types of rocks in the Apostle Islands. Sandstone is what the islands are mostly made out of. Sandstone erodes easily and helps give the Apostle Islands their unique shapes. Some other common rocks found in the Apostle Islands are Basalt and Quartz. Sandstone Basalt Quartz

How Technology Is Used In The Apostle Islands Technology is used to track invasive species, also called non native species, such as the three spine stickleback fish. They also use it to see how high water pollution levels are, and to track the water quality. Three Spine Stickleback Water treatment facility

How The Apostle Islands Where Formed The sandstone that makes up the majority of the islands was deposited in the late Precambrian era, from various streams. Overtime several glacial periods eroded the sandstone by hitting the stone; it eroded away; which formed the islands we know today.

How The Land Is Changing Large scale erosion has plagued the park; it has all happened because of climate change, intensity of storms, fire, and the variations of levels in Lake Superior. Another cause of erosion is human made factors such as air and water pollution.
