Welcome to the Business Studies Department – S3 Business Administration Learning Intention :- Evaluate working practices available to employees (SOC 4-20c) Success Criteria:- I can identify different types of ‘working practices’ I know my rights in employment law about wishing to working flexibly I can evaluate which working practice is most suitable for different situations I can discuss the advantages and disadvantages of working practices for both employer and employee Skills :- Solving real life business problems Thinking critically and creatively Working with others and to a deadline

Flexible Working Practices - Definition … a way of working that suits an employee’s individual needs parents with young children carers’ of elderly parents disabled employees or employees with an illness employees winding down before retirement employees who want a better work/life balance

Employment Rights Act As of June 2014 all employees can request to work flexibly This means choice over where and when they work

This is where the job’s workload is reduced and the company no longer needs a full-time member of staff The job can be for any amount of hours which are less than 35 and which allows the demands of the workload to be met e.g hours per week, 25 hours per week, 10 hours per week Examples of part-time work might be:- working a couple of days a week working only mornings or only afternoons each week

This is where the duties of the job can be completed in the employee’s own house Technology such as laptop and WiFi internet access can ensure that the employee can keep in regular communication with the office Employees can work full-time or part-time at home depending on the demands of the job and their own personal circumstances

This is a situation when a full-time job is split between two employees on an agreed basis Often the split is 50:50 i.e. both employees working 2.5 days per week This type of arrangement needs good communication between the two employees to work successfully

This is where full-time employees are given the opportunity to be flexible with their starting and finishing times e.g. they can come into office any time from 8am and leave at any time up to 6pm Usually the company has core hours when all employees must be at their desk e.g. between 10am – 12 noon and 2pm – 4pm Employees can work more than 35 hours per week (e.g. at busy times) bank these hours and then use them to take an additional day off when it suits them and the company

Home-learning Task on Flexible Working Interview an adult family member or friend/carer about their working practice (i.e. homeworking, full-time, part- time, job-share, flexi-time) Find out what they like and do not like about their working practice Ask if they agree with the change in the law last year which gives all employees the right to request the right to flexible working practices and why they feel this way Either write or type up your findings using full sentences
