Text Structure 8 th Grade

Text structure refers to how the information within a written text is organized. This strategy helps you understand that a text might present a main idea and details; a cause and then its effects; and/or different views of a topic. Definition of Text Structure

Types of Text Structure There are five different types of text structure.  Sequencing  Chronological order  Compare/Contrast  Cause/Effect  Problem/Solution

Sequencing Sequencing describes the order of events or how to do or make something. Step by step process Examples of words that identify sequence are  First  Second  Next  Then  After What are some other words that you can think of that identify sequence?

Get married Chronological Order Similar to sequencing, chronological order looks at events and the dates. Information is organized in order of time. Chrono = timeLogic = order  timelines Boy meets girl Fall in Love

Compare/Contrast The author explains how two or more things are alike and/or how they are different. Examples of words that identify compare/contrast are  Alike  Different  Same as  As well as  Either  Both  Differs from

Cause and Effect The author lists one or more causes or events and the resulting consequences or effects. Purpose is to explain why or how something happened, exists, or works. Problem and Solution The author states a problem and lists one or more solutions to the problem. Pros and cons of the solution may also be stated. Examples of Problem and solution words are  Problem is  Dilemma is  Solved  Question  therefore

Tips to Identify Text Structure 1.Ask, “ what is the author doing in this paragraph? ” Put it in your own words. 2.Have a hunch? Use a graphic organizer to see if the info fits. 3.Look for signal words.
