K-1 Prospective Parent Night Special Areas February 17 th, 2016
Special Areas Specials offered to first grade students include: –Gym (2 times in 6 day schedule) –Art –World Language- Spanish Schuylkill Elementary School –Library –Music Students in 3 rd grade have the option of learning how to play a strings instrument. Students in 4 th and 5 th grade have 1 health class in each 6 day cycle rather than 2 gym classes. They also have the option of joining the school band and chorus.
Art In 1 st grade Art, the students: –Create imaginative projects while experimenting with different materials. –Learn how to draw, paint, watercolor, collage, use oil pastels and work with CLAY! Usually clay is a big hit and is something that many have not tried before! –Learn about famous Art and Artists –Get creative and have fun!
Library Serves as a resource to both students and teachers. –Vast assortment of both classic and modern children’s books –Great selection of non-fiction books in multiple genres Always striving to inspire lifelong readers. –Students learn how use a library and how to care for library books and materials –Opportunities to read and share books with a buddy (classmate or stuffed toy) –Opportunities to read to self using phonics phones Offers access to some of the best e-books and reference sites both at school and at home.
Music Our music program seeks to embed musical skills through movement, games and a carefully selected song repertoire: –Internalize a sense of beat. –Get the students’ bodies producing beats and rhythms in accurate time. –Develop fluent reading of patterns containing three different rhythms. –Acquire the ability to discern high sounds from low sounds. –Build the ability to hear sounds within their minds when those same sounds are not physically present in the room (also known as audiation or “inner hearing”). –Matching musical pitch vocally, and musically reading simple – tri-tonic (songs with three pitches) melodies from the musical staff.
Gym Gym class is a time for kids to enjoy physical activities while developing skills in a non-threatening way. –Class activities include ones that kids may not otherwise experience, as well as activities that they may enjoy for a lifetime. Physical Education in schools is one of the most important ways to help fight childhood obesity. –Kids are sitting for much of the school day. Gym class offers the opportunity for them to be physically active during the school day.
World Language Students are introduced to the Spanish language through movement, conversation, dance, music, games and role-play. Students learn about various Spanish speaking countries and the traditions and customs of those cultures. –Students built an appreciation of world cultures while bringing awareness to their own traditions and customs.
