Welcome to Curriculum Night 3 rd Grade

In Reading third graders can… Read grade level literature and informational text Ask and answer questions using evidence from the text Use vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and spelling Develop specific reading skills (sequencing, cause and effect, compare and contrast, etc..)

In Math third graders can… Use the MyMath link (on Ms. Shepherd’s website) Continue to build previous basic math skills and critical thinking Develop multiplication and division fact fluency Round to the nearest ten and hundred Model, write, and compare fractions Measure area and perimeter of irregular shapes

In Writing third graders can… Write narrative, opinion, and informative paragraphs based on text Conduct short research projects Plan, edit, and revise, and publish Use the Traits of Good Writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, presentation)

In Speaking and Listening third graders can… Come prepared for class discussions Participate in discussions as well as listen and respond to other’s input Report on a topic Ask and answer questions Speak clearly in complete sentences

In Science third graders can… Make observations, investigate, draw conclusions, ask questions, predict results Study layers of the earth, natural disasters, rocks and fossils Describe the behavior of light and sound Observe plant life cycles, parts, and adaptations Research and report on the planets in our solar system

In Social Studies third graders can… Read about American History, World History, Civics/Government, Geography, and Economics Discuss about past events Make connections from past events to current events Identify characteristics of maps Construct their own maps
