Importance of a Builders Club / K-Kids Allows students to enter a leadership and service environment before entering high school Promotes key club, circle k, and Kiwanis to younger generation Expands influence of Kiwanis and knowledge of the Kiwanis family Encourage parents to become involved in Kiwanis + +

How to charter a new club Step 1: select a site –Locate a middle/ junior high school that is interested in creating a Builders Club. –The school must have access to a Kiwanis, Circle K, or Key Club that can sponsor them + +

Step 2: order the New Club Building Kit #1 –information about Builders Club for sponsoring Kiwanis club school principal discusses : – history, purpose, sponsorship, club membership and structure, and types of service. –obtained by calling 800-KIWANIS (or ), ext. #390, or you can order it at Click on “How to Build a Builders Club…. Step 3: Secure a Sponsoring Kiwanis Club –Close in proximity –Participation –Kiwanis members with link to the school ( faculty, administrators, and parents) –Key Club or Circle K club + +

Step 4: faculty advisors –Effective advisor selections: Student input a former member of Key Club or Circle K A teacher or school employee who is a member of the Kiwanis club An individual who is available An individual who will be available to serve for a period of time. + +

Step 5: order the New Club Building Kit #2 –Information for : the sponsoring Kiwanis club the school principal and faculty advisor potential student members –contains a petition for charter (the official document that must be submitted to the Kiwanis International Office) + +

Step 6: recruit members –Decide on principal grade levels –Distribute brochures –Schedule presentation about Builders Club –have refreshments for everyone and include students in a discussion about possible projects a Builders Club could conduct to help the school. –If possible, schedule a project that the students can start on immediately. (1-2 weeks) – hold project surveys to determine what type of service project would best meet the needs of the school and community. –At the end of the meeting, give each student a personalized letter of invitation and a Builders Club brochure. + +

Step 7: work completed –Official petition for charter: (3 sections) Sponsoring Kiwanis Club, School administration, student leaders of builders club Each section must be completed with the signatures of the designated officials. –A membership form (roster) must be completed and submitted with the petition. –Once the Petition for Charter has been completed, the Kiwanis club should submit this along with a check or money order (payable to Kiwanis International) for the new club fee to: Sponsored Organizations and Programs, Membership Department, Kiwanis International, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN – each club is also required to file a copy of the club’s adopted bylaws with the International Office. –Make two copies of the signed bylaws. One should be sent to the International Office for approval, and one should be kept in the club’s files. + +
