ILWS missions, February 2004

ILWS web page June 11, 2007 Updated 2005?

M-TG update (2004 vs. today) 1 USA –TWINS (2004: launch 2004/2006) launched June 2006; status? –THEMIS (2004: launch 2007) launched February 2007 tail science: 12/ /2008 radiation belt science: 4/ /2008 dayside science: 6/ /2008 –MMS (2004: launch 2012) instruments selected in 2005 launch scheduled to 2013

M-TG update (2004 vs. today) 2 USA, continued –LWS Geospace missions RBSP (2004: launch 2012) –instruments selected 2006 –launch scheduled to 2012 ITSP (ITM; 2004: launch 2010) –status?, –simultaneity with RBSP lost? –”Programmatic” spacecraft LANL/GEO&GPS, NOAA/GOES&NPOES, DMSP, HEO,... –Beyond horizon? GEC (Global Electrodynamic Connections, ITM) MC (Magnetospheric Constellation)

M-TG update (2004 vs. today) 3 Canada –ePOP (ITM, 2004: launch 2006) scheduled for launch onboard CASSIOPE in 2008 –RAVENS (2004: launch 2008) has become part of KuaFu launch TBD (2013 or later?) –ORBITALS (2004: simultaneous with RBSP) status ?

M-TG update (2004 vs. today) 4 Russia –Resonance (2004: launch 2009) Beijing 2006: –launch 2012 –operations with RBSP and ORBITALS –ROY (no launch date given in 2004) status? (not mentioned in Beijing) –Interball-3 (2004: launch not before 2010) status? (not mentioned in Beijing)

M-TG update (2004 vs. today) 5 Japan –SCOPE (2004: launch about 2012) presently planned for the ESA Cosmic Vision era –ERG (Energization and Radiation in Geospace) not in the M-TG report in 2004 small satellite to join RBSP and ORBITALS etc. perigee 250 km, apogee 6.6 RE China –SWISE (2004: launches ) not mentioned at the ILWS meeting in Beijing 2006 –KuaFu not in the M-TG report in 2004 more information during the present meeting

M-TG update (2004 vs. today) 6 Europe –Cluster extended to December 2009 –SWARM to be launched in 2009 (”ITM”) –No new magnetospheric missions before the Cosmic Vision era (in practice 2017/2018) –First Cosmic Vision Call (proposals due 29 June, 2007) in total 64 LoIs for 2 launch opportunities only 2 magnetosphere proposals are being prepared –Cross-Scale (S. Schwartz) M 3 in the M-TG report in 2004 –WARP (Waves and relativistic particles, T. Pulkkinen) inner magnetospheric equatorial 4-S/C constellation

Some (weak) conclusions Short term (2007 – 2009) prospects are great –Cluster & Themis supported with SOHO & Stereo Next opprtunity around 2013 –MMS, RBSB, Orbitals, ERG, Resonance –some uncertainties Will Europe return to the magnetosphere in 2017?
