4.3 FRENCH, DUTCH, AND SWEDISH COLONIES

France Jacques Cartier planted 30 foot cross on the shore of eastern Canada, claiming the land for France in 1534 Cartier told French fur companies about the fur bearing animals in northern North America Fur companies hired Samuel de Champlain for the voyage Champlain established Quebec Settled there for winter. The winter was brutal, and out of the 24 settlers, only 8 survived. Kept peace with Native Americans This process started the fur trade Fur traders and trappers claimed more land for France Native Americans told them of a great river that laid south of the area that they had settled Louis Joliet traveled down this river, hoping it led to the pacific; found it didn’t and turned back Robert de la Salle went all the way down the river to see where it went; found it went to the Gulf of Mexico Named the area Louisiana after his king, King Louis the 14 th (XIV)

The Dutch and the Swedes By the 1600s, Europe had little hope remaining of a northwest passage. They then sent Henry Hudson along a voyage to attempt to find a northeast passage; one that goes through the arctic ocean. Then, Henry got stuck in the ice for a month, and then went west to attempt to find a northwest passage. He landed on land and claimed the area for the Dutch. The Dutch soon became interested in the fur trade. In the late 1630s, Sweden sent people to North America. They settled south of New Netherland (settled by the Dutch) in a small area. This troubled the Dutch who did not want competition in the fur trade. This caused conflict between the two groups.
