2a-How to choose a topic Ideally you should choose a topic that interests you. Pick a topic you like Go to the library and browse and use the OPAC.
Ask the librarian Search the Internet Use the encyclopedia Take your time searching for a topic Ask questions to find and narrow the topic
2b Topics to avoid 2b-1 Topics that are too big ‧ Check the OPAC or card catalog at your library ‧ Narrow down the topic and make it specific
2b-2 Topics that can be traced to a single source ‧ Choose topics that can be searched from many sources ‧ Try to avoid a paper on a person’s life
2b-3 Topics that are too technical ‧ Required words that are too professional to understand ‧ Broad enough topics that can be known by educated people
2b-4 Topics that are trivial * Obviously common sense and judgement ** walking is good aerobic exercise
2b-5 Topics that are overused * Heated public debate ** lure you into wild exaggeration * Approach a topic from a new angle
2b-6 Topics that are contemporary * Difficult to find unbiased sources * Speculative reporting TIP: * If your topic lack of sources (library and on the Internet ) ― tackle another topic. * Avoid esoteric topic that you have to spend all of your time chasing down sources.
2c. Narrowing the topic Follow those available resources. Does the topic is arguable or not? Don’t be afraid of experiment or mistake before you find a suitable topic you like. No mater what subject you choose that must be approved by your instructor.
