Trials of the 1920’s

Scopes “Monkey” Trial It was against the law to teach anything that denied the creation story in the Bible in school (i.e. Evolution). A teacher in Tennessee, John Scopes, went against the law and taught it anyway. He was arrested and brought to trial.

Lawyers involved: William Jennings Bryan Argued on the side of the state against Scopes. Famous for running for President (and losing) and believing that the teaching of evolution should be banned from schools.

Lawyers involved: Clarence Darrow High-powered attorney Friends with Bryan. Disagreed about religion

What was actually on trial? The Bible vs. Theory of Evolution, not the law! Darrow called Bryan to testify about the Bible.

Verdict The jury took 10 minutes to find Scopes guilty. Judge fined Scopes $100 for breaking the law. Conviction overturned a year late because the judge imposed the fine and not the jury.

Results Eventually, evolution is allowed to be taught in school. Creationism is rarely taught today.

Think about this… Do you think that someone who does not believe the same things as you should be punished for it? What if that person was accused of a crime that, it turns out, they didn’t commit? Would you care? Would you protect their rights or ignore their innocence because it made you feel safer?

What happened? 2 men were robbed and killed at a shoe factory. 2 Italian born anarchist immigrants were arrested and tried for the crime.

What does “anarchist” mean? Someone who wants a country with no government of law. These people terrified Americans!

Pause Read the CSI Boston as a class and complete the assignment.

Sacco and Vanzetti Trial Sacco had a gun that was SIMILAR to the gun used. Some of the public thought that they were guilty because of their beliefs. Others thought they were being prosecuted JUST because of their beliefs.

Verdict On July 14, 1921, they were convicted, even though the evidence didn’t support it, and were sentenced to death. Lawyers tried for 6 years to get a new trial, but were denied.

Result On August 23, 1927, they were both executed, claiming their innocence until their deaths.
