Introduction to Mental Illness HSP3U

Mental Illness The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) describes mental illness as, “…characterized by alterations in thinking, mood or behaviour (or a combination), and impaired functioning over an extended period of time. The symptoms vary from mild to severe depending on the type, the individual, the family and socio-economic environment”.

Mental Health A state of wellbeing

Schizophrenia The Schizophrenia Society of Canada defines Schizophrenia as: Interfering with a person's ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions and relate to others, schizophrenia impairs a person's ability to function to their potential when it is not treated. Psychosis (mind-illness) is defined as the experience of loss of contact with reality and usually involves hallucinations and delusions. Psychosis is a common symptom of schizophrenia.
