After the defeat in New York, Washington moved into New Jersey and then Pennsylvania to escape British capture… His men were dying…had poor clothing for the harsh winter, and were deserting each day “I am wearied to death. I think the game is pretty near up” -GW to his brother 1776 GW made a bold move…he led troops across the Delaware River on Christmas night to surprise the German mercenaries at Trenton
