UTILIZATION OF CAMERAS IN A MASS TRANSIT ENVIORNMENT FOR MAJOR EVENT PLANNING TECHNOLOGIES FOR CRITICAL INCIDENT PREPARDNESS

History The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is an independent governmental agency created by state legislation. The CTA began operating on October 1, 1947, after it acquired the properties of the Chicago Rapid Transit Company and the Chicago Surface Lines. October 1, 1952, CTA became the sole operator of the Chicago transit when it purchased the Chicago Motor Coach system.

Operations and Service Area The Chicago Transit Authority operates the nation’s second largest public transportation system. Today CTA operates Bus and Rail systems which serve a population of 3.9 million in Chicago and 40 surrounding suburbs and CTA average weekday rider ship on bus system is 1.13 million and 0.64 million on rail system.

CTA’s 1,190 rapid transit cars operate over eight routes and 222 miles of track. CTA trains provide about 500,000 customer trips each day and serve 143 stations. CTA rail routes travel over numerous overpasses, underpasses and grade crossings. CTA rail routes total route miles of which 35.8 are on elevated structure, 20.6 miles are on elevated embankment, and 35 miles are at grade level. In addition both the Red Line and the Blue Line travel a portion of their routes through 11.4 miles subway tunnels. RAIL OPERATIONS

MISSION STATEMENT It is the objective of the Chicago Transit Authority to provide safe, clean, on-time courteous and efficient service to its passengers while minimizing vandalism and property damage associated with all of the Authority’s vehicles and facilities. To this end, it is the responsibility of all of the Authority’s employees to make sure we provide service in the most secure manner possible.
