Surface Area of Prisms We are learning to...find the surface area of prisms. Thursday, March 03, 2016

Surface Area of Prism  Review of Area Formulas: Square: (side)(side) or s 2 Rectangle: (length)(width) Triangle: ½(base)(height) or  Remember the base and height of a triangle are always perpendicular. This means that they must meet at a right angle.

Surface Area of Prism  Vocabulary: Surface Area – the sum of the areas of a solid’s faces

4 cm 3 cm 2 cm Notice that there is an identical side to the one we just found the are of! Area of Side 1: (3)(4) = 12 square cm Area of Side 2: (3)(4) = 12 square cm Area of Side 3: (2)(4) = 8 square cm Area of Side 4: (2)(4) = 8 square cm Area of Side 5: (3)(2) = 6 square cm Find the sum! Total Surface Area = 52 square cm Area of Side 6: (3)(2) = 6 square cm

6 cm 4 cm 5 cm 3 cm Area of Side 1: ½(6)(4) = 12 square cm Area of Side 2: ½(6)(4) = 12 square cm Area of Side 3: (5)(3) = 15 square cm Area of Side 4: (5)(3) = 15 square cm Area of Side 5: (6)(3) = 18 square cm Find the sum! Total Surface Area = 72 square cm

Surface Area of Prism  Group Practice: With your group find the surface area of the prisms in your notes!
