Translating Word Problems

S.W.B.A.T  Take their knowledge of translating expressions and use it to interpret and solve word problems

Example 1  My dad is taller than me. Let d stand for the height of my dad in feet. I am 5 feet tall. Write the expression to show how much taller my did is than me.  Highlight important words  Let d stand for dad  I am 5 feet tall  How much taller  Determine what “How much taller” is asking you to do  Subtraction  Dad is taller than me  d-5 is my expression

Example 2  Lets say “f” stands for the number of fans there are at a Sacred Heart Soccer game. Each fan gets 2 thunder sticks each. Write an algebraic expression to represent the total number of thunder sticks given out at the soccer game.

 Each fan gets 2 sticks each, so we are putting the fans into equal groups of 2  Therefore, we are going to multiply 2 and f to see how many thunder sticks are given out  Our expression is 2f
