Religious Freedom Why did the Pilgrims come to America? England changed religions Moved to Holland Crossed to join Jamestown

Pilgrims English settlers of the 1600’s who sought religious freedom in the Americas. They were also called Separatists.

The Trip They sailed on the Mayflower. “Blown off course” Landed in November 1620 in Massachusetts Decided to settle where they landed.

Mayflower Compact of 1620 Signed by Pilgrims and Non- Pilgrims (males) it formed a social contract for self- government. It made Plymouth a Commonwealth.

Commonwealth. A place where everyone works together for the good of the people.

First Winter Settled in an abandoned Indian village. Half of them died during the first winter.

Indian Help With the help of the local natives, the Pilgrims were able to plant crops, and catch eels in the river.
