Content Overview: This is the continuing “story” of our US history picking up right where students left off last year! We focus on history, geography, civics, and economics throughout the year in each unit. We will start with the 1860’s (time right before Civil War) and go until present day! Unit 1: Content themes, Citizenship and our Constitution, introduction to economy across time Unit 2: Civil War Unit 3: Reconstruction Unit 4: America at the Turn of the Century Unit 5: WWI, Jazz Age, Great Depression Unit 6: WWII and the Cold War Unit 7: Overcoming the Past: The Age of Civil Rights Unit 8: Understanding the News: America’s Role in the 21 st Century Unit 9: US Developments Present Unit 10: Review and Preview 6 th

Have fun, take in the “story” our history tells us, and join in the dramatic flare as we take a dive back in time!! Apply reading and writing skills to further develop their understanding of social studies. Use the Social Studies journal as a study tool, but ALWAYS have it in class. The goal is to have students feel, see, connect, and learn our country’s history and apply life lessons.

Connect Math to real-life problems you encounter at home and talk together about how to solve them. Complete assignments, remembering the “BIG 3” Use a pencil, copy the problem, show your work Be proficient in knowing math facts for all four operations. The goal is to have our children think like mathematicians.

Have regular conversations with your child about a wide variety of subjects. Ask why. Allow your child to take the natural consequences of his/her decisions. Encourage your child to advocate for himself/herself.
