USING PROBLEMS WITH RATIO AND PERCENTS 7.RP.3 I CAN USE PROPORTIONAL REASONING TO SOLVE REAL WORLD RATIO AND PERCENT PROBLEMS.

REAL WORLD EXAMPLES??? Ratios and Proportions can be used to solve many real world problems including percent problems. Can you think of some real world examples that we can solve with proportions?

REAL WORLD EXAMPLES Sales Tax Tip Commission (Percentage of the total amount of sales made) Mark Ups and Discounts Simple Interest

WHAT IS A PERCENT?

USING PROPORTIONS TO SOLVE PERCENT PROBLEMS

EXAMPLE: Set up a proportion to solve the following: Find 22% of 95

PRACTICE 1. Find 3.5% of is 90% of what number? 3. 7 is what percent of 350?

REAL WORLD EXAMPLE A survey shows that 43% of high school and middle school students buy school lunches. If Campbell County School District has 2,900 high school and middle school students, about how many buy lunch?

REAL WORLD EXAMPLE Set up a Proportion to Solve: Seventh Grade Students were surveyed to find out how much they would be willing to pay to go on a class trip. 24% of the students surveyed said that they would pay $35 dollars. If there are 360 students in the 7 th grade, about how many would be willing to pay $35 for a class trip?

FINDING THE SALES TAX OF AN ITEM What is sales tax? Is sales tax added or subtracted to the total bill? What does the amount of sales tax depend on?

WHAT IS SALES TAX?? A sales tax is a tax paid to a governing body for the sales of certain goods and services. Usually laws allow (or require) the seller to collect funds for the tax from the consumer at the point of purchase. Is sales tax added or subtracted from the item price?

FINDING THE SALES TAX OF AN ITEM

Example In Massachusetts, the sales tax is 6.25%. If someone buys a sweater for $24.95, how much will they pay in sales taxes?

What is the total cost of the poles, rounded to the nearest cent? 2.Bobby went to the store and bought a new outfit for the school dance. The price tag on the outfit was $73.00 and he paid 5.2% in sales tax. How much did Bobby pay in sales tax for his outfit? 3.Kevin bought some souvenirs in Missouri for $ The sales tax was 4.225%.
