The Inca

SS6H1 The student will describe the impact of European contact on Latin America a. Describe the encounter and consequences of the conflict between the Spanish and the Aztecs and Incas and the roles of Cortes, Montezuma, Pizzaro, and Atahualpa.

The Inca lived in present day Andes Mountains with their capital being in Peru.

Machu Picchu was one of the ancient cities of the Inca.

The Inca used Terraces to farm in the Andes Mountains

Atahualpa was the Leader of the Inca when the Spanish arrived.

Pizarro was the Conquistador that conquered the Inca.

The Spanish defeated the Inca.

How were a small group of Spanish Conquistadors able to defeat such a large number of Incan soldiers?

Superior weapons such as guns, cannons, and swords European diseases killed off many of the Inca. Horses Native American allies

How did the arrival of the Spanish affect the Indigenous People? They were made to change to the language and religion of the people who conquered. European diseases killed many of them. Many died in battles with conquering European countries. Many of them were made to be slaves.

Like the Aztec the Inca were polytheistic, meaning they worshipped many gods.
