BOAT CREW PROGRAM 1

 As the Auxiliary’s best trained and most experienced mentors, we’re bringing these changes to the mentoring program to the QE’s first. QE’s are the foundation of the Mentoring program. Changes in the program are designed to improve mentoring and ultimately produce a better qualified candidate. 2

1. What is mentoring? Mentoring is a commitment between two people to share knowledge and experience so that one will grow both professionally as well as personally. 2. What does one have to have to be a successful mentor (toolbox)? a. Desire: 1.The commitment may be for several months (appointment is for one year). It starts when they meet and continues until the follow up after a successful check ride. b. Time: 1.The Mentor must be available and able to meet with the candidate on a regular basis. Optimally, the candidate should have only one Primary Mentor. He/she many have many Mentors, but only one Primary Mentor. QE Request form will now indicate the candidate’s Primary Mentor. 3

c. People skills: 1.The Mentor must be able to reach and relate to the candidate. d. Qualifications: 1.The Mentor must possess a qualification, for a minimum of two years, in that area and must be current, may not be in REYR. e. Experience 1.The Mentor must have sufficient experience in the area of his/her qualification. 4

f. The Attack plan: 1.Realistic goals, expectations and schedules. Remember: we all have other lives. 2. When the Mentor is satisfied that the candidate has learned and is proficient in each of the elements of the task, then and only then may the Mentor initial the candidate’s book. 5

3. Mentoring should remain outside of the Chain of Leadership. 4. The Mentor should assure the Candidate of confidentiality. 5. The Primary Mentor should arrange a “dress rehearsal” before the check ride to fine tune the candidate and to allow the candidate to understand how the QE will approach the check ride, as it is the Primary Mentor who will advise the FSO-MT or FC to request the QE. 6

7. The Mentor should use listening, counseling, coaching and goal setting to help the Candidate succeed. 8. The Mentor should: a. Explore available training options b. Build self esteem c. Guide candidate through the learning process d. Will identify references to study for each task e. Evaluate each session f. Discuss progress g. Encourage feedback from the Candidate h. Should assist the candidate in reaching their full potential i. “A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself” – Oprah Winfrey 7

A. Flotilla Commander appointment – DCdr approval B. Candidate’s qualification (minimum of two years and current) C. Candidate’s experience D. Candidate’s people skills E. A Mentor Database will be established 8

You’ve been appointed a mentor, now you have to learn to mentor. A. QE’s and Mentors must be on the same sheet of music B. The Boat Crew Seamanship Manual, Auxiliary Boat Crew Training Manual and the Mentoring Handbook shall serve as the benchmarks. C. There will be one standard of training 9

10 D. All Mentors should be encouraged to attend Mentor training E. QE’s should attend Mentor training F. This year’s Mentor training focus will be: 1. Pre underway checklist & GAR form 2. Towing evolutions 3. Man overboard evolutions 4. Anchor watch 5. Comms
