Aims By the end of the lesson you should understand The functional divisions of the brain The diencehpalon, the midbrain and the hind brain

Anatomy of the brain –vertical section Forebrain, the cerebrum Diencephalon-contains the thalamus and the hypothalamus Midbrain Hindbrain Cerebellum and the medulla oblongata

Function of the hypothalamus Integration of information Output via the autonomic NS or Pituitary Gland Temperature- input from skin and also receptors within Hypothalamus Impulses set out via autonomic NS to correct imbalance

Hypothalamus and Pituitary Secretions from the posterior pituitary controlled by neurones These secrete the hormone itself and not a neurotransmitter ADH and oxcitocin- contractions in child birth and milk secretion

Anterior pituitary Neurones from the hypothalmus produce several different hormones These pass through blood vessels and cause the pituitary to secrete another hormones. Functions of the hind brain Cerebellum, control and co- ordination of movement Medulla oblongata-control of breathing, heart rate and blood pressure Vagus nerve-modulated by neurones from cerebrum Receptors on the carotid arteries and the aorta feed into MO for breathing rate and depth Link to the sino atrial node to control heart rate and blood pressure
