Would, Should, Could en français Le Conditionnel pg 148 Would, Should, Could en français

Qu’est-ce que c’est, le Conditionnel? In English, the Conditional is formed simply by using “would/should/could - a verb.” Future stem + imperfect endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient)

*these stems are the same for future tense Irregular Stems ir- aller fer- faire aur- avoir ser- être verr- voir paier- payer viendr- venir devr- devenir pourr- pouvoir voudr- vouloir enverr- envoyer recevr- recevoir saur- savoir achèter- acheter appeler - appeller There are a few other verbs on page 201 of the textbook, but these are the most important of them. *these stems are the same for future tense

Next…Verb Endings Add the ending that coordinates with the subject of your sentence. Je -ais Nous -ions Tu -ais Vous -iez Il/Elle/On -ait Ils/Elles -aient

LE CONDITIONNEL! Je parlerais à Pierre = I would talk to Pierre Tu finirais tes devoirs = You would finish your homework Il répondrait à mon email = He would respond to my email Nous serions à l’heure = We would be on time Vous iriez à l’école = You would go to school Elles auraient $20 = They would have $20

Should and Could To express that someone should do something, use the verb Devoir + the verb. Tu devrais ranger ta chambre! You should clean your room! To express that someone could do something, use the verb Pouvoir + the verb. Tu pourrais aller au cinéma. You could go to the movies. You can also use should and could alone in French, like in English. Tu devrais! You should! Tu pourrais! You could!

Si clause The Conditional and the Imperfect are often used together in a sentence to express what would happen if (Si) a certain condition is met. Keep this pattern in mind: “Si + Imparfait, Conditionnel” Si j’avais le temps, je prendrais de l’exercice. (If I had time, I would exercise.) Si vous y alliez avec vos amis, vous vous amuseriez beaucoup! (If you went with your friends, you would have fun.)
