The Developmental Management Approach to Classroom Behaviour Responding to Individual needs Ramon Lewis 2008 TWPS introduction of this program discussed by Annette Honeysett.

The Journey School profile and background The Beginning Currently Moving forward… My personal journey so far

School Profile and Background Approximately 400 students Culturally diverse and soc-economic disadvantaged population Like 9 school Indicators show that our students usually achieve above the expected level in reading School divided into 3 areas – and each area plans and works together co-operatively as a team.

The Beginning Student welfare and discipline Policy & Procedures –It is an inclusive document which outlines a number of rights and responsibilities for parents, staff and students in great detailed. –There are 10 school rules that students need to follow, teachers are expected to discuss these and set classroom rules with students at the beginning of each school year. –Work and behaviour are recognised in a number of positive ways.

Currently DMA material reviewed and condensed for staff reference. Visits to and discussion with other schools to gather information and ideas to enable successful implementation of the program. Survey of TWPS staff undertaken. Training of and role play with staff on DMA begun.

Moving forward… Program successfully implemented - agreement by stakeholders to implement, monitor and measure DMA - rights simplified to 2 or 3 - consistent application across all areas

My Personal Journey so far…

Professional Development Attended Ramon Lewis’ Discussion Read, Review and Simplify book for use in classroom situation (Look and Find Chart).

Rules/Rights Throw out the old and introduce the new rights to the classroom. Brainstorm what rights mean Each child creates a Y chart on one aspect that they feel they need to improve on – share.

A hint is all I need … to steadily swim along. Be Gentle…. I respond to praise, a smile, a wink, a nod or rewards. Careful… learning happens when we have a good and calm relationship. Do I need understanding? Teacher Tools
