Joseph Conrad and the Story of Heart of Darkness Born in 1857, Conrad became a sailor at 17, and captainship of a steamboat through the Belgian Congo inspired HoD. Main narrative told by character of Marlow, who finds himself interested in a man named Kurtz. Marlow’s search for Kurtz ends up being very bizarre, and ends up finding Kurtz a lunatic “god” in the middle of the jungle.

The Story of Apocalypse Now Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Based on Heart of Darkness. Narrative told by Cpt. Willard, who’s assigned by the U.S. Army to go into Vietnam and find the missing Col. Kurtz. Willard’s search for Kurtz ends up being very bizarre, and ends up finding Kurtz a lunatic “god” in the middle of the jungle. I am very, very sorry for how icky this picture is.

Some Greater Similarities of the Two Stories Africa-Vietnam Russian Trader- American Filmmaker The Company-U.S., Imperialism-War

Some More Detailed Similarities betwixt the Two Stories Marlow’s Motivation for Leaving: Sense of Adventure v. Lack of Purpose Impressionism and Delay Decoding: Significance revealed later on, creation of visual images Kurtz’ Death: Illness v. Slaughter

T.S. Eliot’s Hollow Men Indictment of modern man and the failure of the confidence that characterizes it. Mr./Col. Kurtz at least believed in what he was doing- no matter how horrific the results. No middle ground- Kurtz tries to bridge civilized w/ uncivilized, the straw men are unable to choose which direction they will take.

The Music of Apocalypse Now, especially Ride of the Valkyrie Opening clip features a jungle being napalmed, set to the Doors’ The End Comparison between Nazi invasion & U.S. involvement in Vietnam Wagner, an anti-semite and German nationalist (Hitler was a big fan), wrote Valkyrie into his The Ring of the Niebelungs
