Teaching the Gospel to our Kids (and ourselves) Based on Jack Klumpenhower’s book Show Them Jesus

Show Them Jesus by Jack Klumpenhower Teaching in light of the Good News

What we’ll discuss What is the good news? Why should we focus on the good news? How are we equipped to teach the good news? Lots of examples

What is the Good News? “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 Christ: Supreme prophet Creator Wisdom incarnate Teacher from whom we learn the mysteries of God Good Shepherd Lord of Lords King of Kings Eternal guardian to whom we owe all allegiance

What is the Good News? “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 died: We owe a debt The debt must be paid by the offender or the offended We don’t have the funds to repay our debt Jesus, rich in holiness, is the only one who can afford it

“For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 for our sins: We were doomed to die but Jesus died so we could live We were guilty but Jesus was condemned so we could be pardoned We were cursed but Jesus took our curse so we could be blessed We were shamed but Jesus endured shame to give us honor We were enemies but Jesus deflected his wrath to give us God’s favor We were shut out but Jesus died alone so we might never be alone We had no hope for happiness but Jesus endured sadness to give us eternal joy

Why should we focus on the Good News? Lest we create Pharisees or Prodigals In order to love Jesus more than sin It’s the whole point of the Bible Can’t understand the Bible without it

Becoming equipped to teach the Good News Reading the Bible Praying Being captivated by Him

Becoming equipped to teach the Good News He creates and sustains life He fights evil He defends the helpless He chooses people to be his own He lives among them He makes and keeps covenants He declares His law He gives grace He reveals Himself He displays His majesty He champions justice He raises up rescuers and kings He saves from sin and death He provides rest He protects He heals He speaks He disciplines He forgives He loves Is Jesus better than EVERYTHING?

Becoming equipped to teach the Good News Reminder “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.” 1 Chronicles 29:11 Freedom in remembering “Salvation belongs to the Lord” (Jonah 2:9) The most practical step…deepening our own faith

Practical Application Understanding the Old Testament in light of Jesus Questions to ask: What is God doing for His people in this story? How does God do the same for us– only better – in Jesus? (the “good news”) How does believing this good news change how we live? Examples: Jonah The 10 Commandments

Practical Application Understanding the New Testament in light of Jesus Focus on: Context (zoom out) Details (zoom in) Examples: Mary and Martha The Good Samaritan Obey your parents

Practical Application Examples with visual aids −Report card −Shark and sin −King of the hill −Puppet party

Final Tips Find stronger resources Practice…a lot…even when it’s awkward

Practice time 1 Samuel 3 What is God doing for His people in this story? How does Jesus do the same for us? How does believing this good news change how we live?

1 Samuel 3: The Lord Calls Samuel Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down.

And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. And I declare to him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.”

Samuel lay until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. And Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.” And Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.” And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord. And the Lord appeared again at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord.
