Student-Directed Career Pathway Research Project Columbus High School

Unit 1: Brainstorming Possible Questions Does Madison College have classes on Phlebotomy? Does Madison College have resources for single mothers? What kind of schedule will be conducive to being a student and caring for a child?

Unit 2: Checking with Others Used SurveyMonkey and interviewed four staff members at Columbus High School. Does Madison College have the resources I need, as a single mother with special needs, to be a successful graduate in the Phlebotomy program?

Unit 3: Analyzing What Others Have to Say After review of the survey results, I made the following comment: “I liked getting positive feedback. It made me feel good.”

Unit 4: Preparing a Research Proposal …I am researching options for post-secondary schools because I am a single mother trying to support my child. I am currently a high school senior with an identified disability. I think that by going to college to get a degree as a phlebotomist I will have more opportunities and accomplishments in my life. I will be able to get a job that pays well, do something I enjoy and be able to support my child.

Unit 5: Receiving Feedback Used CHS Writing Assessment—

Unit 6: Implement the Research Plan Complete “Madison College Admissions” Application (Attachment 6) by August 31, August 2012: Meet with Advisor/DRS regarding IEP (Attachment 7) accommodations and modifications and Columbus transcript (Attachment 8). Create schedule of classes for Fall 2012 semester using Attachments 1-2. Complete FAFSA Application (Attachment 3). Complete Child Care Tuition Assistance Program (Attachment 4). When admitted to the Phlebotomy Program, complete Background Information Disclosure (Attachment 5).

Unit 7: Summarizing the Research “I had to ask a lot of questions in order to learn the amount of information that I did.”

Unit 8: Presenting the Research Report A power point presentation was given to my instructor and classmates on all the information that was learned while completing this project.

Unit 9: Reflection of Research Project “Things are hard when I have to do them on my own…”

Observation: “It took a lot of time and wasn’t always easy. But, I learned a lot about myself as a mom and as a student.” -

Conclusion: “I liked researching the career of Phlebotomy. I know, for sure, that’s what I want to do.” -
