GRADE CONTROL: the VIFFLE {Combo of the cross- Vane & rocked rIFFLE}

THIS METHOD IS A DAVE DERRICK & JOHN MCCULLAH DISCOVERY {hatched late at night in the Seattle airport while headed to Alaska}

THE VIFFLE: Combining the best attributes of both the Cross-Vane (hydraulically braking {slowing} current near both banks) & the Engineered Rocked Riffle (riffle dissipating energy, improving fish passage, & moving the deep scour hole from underneath the structure to a position downstream of the ERR).

THE VIFFLE Combination of a Cross- Vane & Rocked Riffle Onondaga Creek, Site 5-D, Lafayette, NY Mini case study: 2 of 4

Step #1: Build the two Rock Vanes (arms) & center connector of the Cross-Vane & key the CV deeply into both banks with robust vegetated keys.

Looking US at the rock Cross-Vane section of a Viffle, rocked riffle not constructed yet. Onondaga Creek, Site 5-D, Aug Photo by Mark Schaub, OCSWCD Mini case study: 2 of 4

Step #2: Starting downstream, dig into the bed across the channel between the two keys & start placing stones in compression underground & building upstream with rows of stones placed in compression until this ERR is blended into the Cross-Vane structure.
