The Spirit of Local Food By Kiani Conley-Wilson

In the city of Wilmington, California (near Los Angeles) there lived three best friends named Harper, Riley, and Taylor.

Lately, Riley has been eating poorly, which has made it hard to pay attention and caused problems at school.

Because a lot of the food in local stores is unhealthy, it is difficult for Riley to get healthy food. In many cities, there are healthy food “deserts” where little healthy food is available

Since food is moved from other countries by jet, truck, and boat (all of which run on fossil fuels), transportation of food contributes to bad air.

Buying and consuming local food is a solution to getting better food. Harper decides the group should go to their local farmers market.

Harper brings her friends to the market, where they learn that urban farming is something they can do themselves.

The three friends, along with numerous neighbors, decide to pledge to only buying food grown in California.

Riley and her friends starts to eat healthier, and the quality of their air begins to improve.

After a few weeks, Taylor realizes their mood has improved because volunteering and gardening provides many health benefits and ways for community members to come together.

Through the spirit of local food, the three best friends figured out how to eat healthy and spend time outside while making the quality of air better for everyone in the city.
