Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Location: Dubois, PA

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building What is this building? What is it for? Who uses it? Owned by the Dubois Educational Foundation Built just off of Penn State Dubois Campus Career searching or training Educators, students and staff

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building What is the theme of this building?? What does it represent? Solid Hands-on Connected Proficient Durable Efficient Strong Capable Reasonable Purpose Practical Established Sensible Potential

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building What could possibly exemplify the same attributes? A skilled Craftsman

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Solid Hands-on Connected Proficient Durable Efficient Strong Capable Purpose Practical Established Sensible

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Partitions Entrance PA Career Space -Used by PA Career Space as an open office area to conduct day to day business sf, 10ft ceilings -Tasks include reading, writing, computer work, and face to face communication Steel columns

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Issues to deal within an open office plan -VDT glare direct/reflected -Good Facial renderings -Uniformity -Pleasantness of atmosphere -Sufficient illuminance levels Issues to deal with in this specific space -Watts/sf need to comply with the ASHRAE standards

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building PA Career Space proposal For this space I realized we might be dealing with an energy problem with such a large space that needs a lot of light at the task plane. The allotted criteria is 1.25 w/sf. My thinking was a possible skylight system of no more than six skylight wells. With the finished ceiling a few feet away from the top of the roof it seems like a great idea to get some daylight in the space while also saving energy. The ceiling is a drop ceiling with steel bracing above that. Then the solid insulation to the roof is about 1 foot. Studies have also proven that not only are people more happy when they work in a daylit area, but are also more efficient. In addition to the skylights, several rows of indirect linear compact florescent fixtures will be used to fill in the rest of the room.

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Rear entrance Couches and reading tables Rear Entrance -Rear, but main entrance to the building -Loosely connected to the lobby sf, 10ft ceilings -Tasks include reading, and face to face communication

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Issues to deal within an entrance/lounge space - -It is the first space a person sees in a building. It sets the tone for everything else so it should be very well thought out - -Make a point to adjust the light levels for daytime/nighttime needs - -Color rendering issues - -Facial modeling Issues to deal with in this specific space -Dealing with the all brick walls

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Entrance/Lounge Proposal For this space I’m proposing to use the common 2x2 or 2 x 4 troffers. This will fit well with the drop ceiling and also have a more industrial look. However, in conjunction with trying to be simple but not boring I’m going to use a slightly different approach. The lamps would actually be set back into the ceiling with the sides sloping up towards the center to create a triangle look. This will give the space a much more unique appeal

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Proposed Floorplan

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building A common, yet, uncommon design As you can see, this proposal, by bring out the most fundamental shapes allows for a very reliable, common system to look unique, and crafted.

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Lobby -Ceiling open through all levels of the building -Wraps around the public elevator -All glass wall on south side -Tasks include reading and face to face communication Thirty foot ceilings Entrance from Second floor Glass wall

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Issues to deal within a lobby space -Similar to Entrance area in that it should portray the theme of the building very strongly - Facial rendering - Color rendering issues Issues to deal with in this specific space - Dealing with the very high ceiling in a very low square footage area - -Acknowledging that this space is the only space visible to passer bys and should be a good nighttime beacon.

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Lobby Proposal For the lobby, I’ve decided to go with only two fixture types. The first one will be a simple half sphere (maybe slightly flattened) with a metal halide PAR downlight. This will be used during daytime for general lighting of the lobby. It will project a strong, durable yet modern feeling. During the night hours, I’m also proposing to “outline” the stairway. By both uplighting and downlighting the stringers and columns that box in the stairways. This would be a great way to grab attention at night from passer-bys since the stairs are already the focal point of the huge glass façade. I believe this will also evoke a sense of establishment and purpose for the building..

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Proposed Lobby Floorplan Strong and durable, yet beautiful in its own simplistic way

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Night time vision : Showcasing and emphasizing the staircase’s practical construction

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Night time view of the beacon Solid Strong Capable

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Exterior - Leads to the main entrance area. -Large grassy space in between the sidewalk paths -Mostly brick façade with some architectural metal panels in several areas Rear entrance Brick Façade Architectural Panels

Josh Lutton January 2005 Dubois Educational Foundation Workforce Technology Building Exterior Proposal The exterior will experience the most complete overhaul than any of the other spaces. With such a large amount of concrete devoted to a walk-way extending along both wings of the building, I think the use of bollards would be a great idea. These bollards would be of the same stainless steel color I have proposed for the lobby pendants. Then a possible strip lighting along the top of the architectural wall that’s above the entrance. This will help to locate the entrance and draw people towards it. I will also use this approach across the glass curtain wall on the front of the building Also to help locate the main entrance and other side entrances, some subtle, quite exterior downlights.
