Statistics

A measure of central tendency is a measure that tells us where the middle of a bunch of data lies. The three most common measures of central tendency are the mean, the median, and the mode.

Definition: the average number of a set of data Steps to finding 1. Add all the numbers up in the data set 2. Divide by the total amount of numbers in the data set Example: Find the mean of the following test scores: 80, 56, 78, 92, 69, 74, 80, 91 Mean = 77.5

Definition: the middle number in the data set Steps to finding 1. Order the numbers from least to greatest 2. Locate the number/numbers in the middle 3. If there are two numbers in the middle, find the mean of those two numbers Example Find the median of the following test scores: 80, 56, 78, 92, 69, 74, 80, 91 Median = 79

Definition: the number that appears the most in the data set Steps to finding 1. Find the number that’s listed the most Example Find the mode of the following test scores: 80, 56, 78, 92, 69, 74, 80, 91 NOTE: Sometimes there is no mode because all the data are different. Mode =80

Definition: the distance between the highest and lowest values Steps to finding 1. Find the highest and lowest values 2. Subtract the two Example Find the range of the following test scores: 80, 56, 78, 92, 69, 74, 80, 91 Range = 36

In your own words, HOW do you find the following: 1.) Mean 2.) Median 3.) Mode 4.) Range
