ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGIES

Assisted Reproductive Technologies: - Technologies used to help people have babies when the male or female is infertile. - Infertility : not able to make a baby

TYPES 1. Artificial Insemination - semen in collected from the male and injected into the female

TYPES 1. Artificial Insemination - semen in collected from the male and injected into the female uses: a. Agricultural breeding (cows, horses, etc) b. Breed endangered species in zoos

c.In humans, if a man cannot produce healthy sperm, semen can be collected from a donor. This semen can then be injected into the woman

Or: if the woman is infertile, the man’s semen will be collected and injected into a surrogate mother, a woman who agrees to become pregnant and carry the baby

c.In humans, if a man cannot produce healthy sperm, semen can be collected from a donor. This semen can then be injected into the woman 2. In Vitro Fertilization: Used if the tube from the ovary to the uterus is blocked. -the ovum is taken from the ovary, -ovum and sperm are mixed in a petri dish

- fertilization occurs - the zygote is injected into the uterus

3. Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer - Ova are removed from the ovary and mixed with sperm in a petri dish. - the mixture is immediately injected into the fallopian tubes. - fertilization takes place inside females body

4. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection - An ovum is removed from the ovary - The ovum is injected with a single sperm. - The zygote is implanted in the female’s uterus
