Introduction to Freud : Levels of Consciousness Close your eyes and sit quietly for a moment. What is going on in your mind? What do you see or hear there? What kind of interactions are occurring inside your mind? What is going on outside your mind? This is the conscious mind.

Introduction to Freud : Levels of Consciousness What is your father’s first name? What does your best friend’s face look like? What is your first memory? This part of your mind is called the preconscious mind. Where are those facts, images, and memories when you aren’t recalling them?

Introduction to Freud : Levels of Consciousness If you could immediately satisfy a strong desire of yours without suffering any consequences whatsoever, what would you do? These impulses come from the unconscious mind.
